"From Ancient Grudge"

Whoops! This was meant to have been posted yesterday, but wasn't. Please do it tonight!

Yesterday and today, we worked with the prologue to Romeo and Juliet, a Shakespearean sonnet that summarizes the story of the play (not unlike the sonnets we wrote summarizing Death of a Salesman).

Line 3 of the prologue mentions that there is a "ancient grudge" between the Montagues and Capulets, but tells us no more about the origin of this grudge.

In one paragraph of 4-6 sentence, write a speculative story about what exactly began the feud between these "two households".

  1. Well our group decided that there are two children one of the Montague, and one of the Capulet. A montague has a real sword, then a man on he horce passes, a Capulet accidently falls and falls on the sword and dies. Then parents come and start arguing and fighting, that is how they faught. So really the child just wasn't there at the right place on the right time, and died because of an accident.

  2. Feud between the two families started with two good friends; Montague and Capulet. They were walking around Verona together, when they both spotted a stray and perfect chicken, perfect for a dinner. Both dived for it, and they both took a hold of it, tugging at the prized chicken, stating to the other that the chicken was theirs. All of a sudden, they rip the chicken in half out of their argument, and each goes home to tell their family to hate the other. This is how the grudge started.

  3. In our short scene in class we acted out as this long fight with the capulets vs. the montagues in the play 'Romeo and juliet' started with a crime such as stealing and then further on revenge like death.
But all the other examples the class came up with were pretty plausible as well. I liked the example of how the grudge started because of a mistake which neither of the families were
supposed to be blamed for. It did thought obviously start with the 2 families being good friends/neighbours but after the 'incident' they would go completely against each other.

  4. I was in two lit groups so i will explain both of them.
'I did with Valentina, Sara and Polina we did that the Montague which was me and Sara stole something from the Capulets who were Valentina and Polina. Then Polina killed Sara the Montague so me and Valentina who supposed to be friends saw it and were arguing!!

Then the other one with Christina Evita and me. We were talking about the bracelet of Evita who was a Montague ( right??) and she was telling that the bracelet had cost more than our house so Tatiana who was I think from my side stole it!!!

So that was the grudge about, stealing and killing!

  5. The inncedent i think happened that made the Montague's and Capulet's hate one another was one that happened over a girl.

Both montague and capulet were two young boys who adored this young girl, they both agreed not to do anything with her, as they didnt want their friendship to be destroyed but the capulet went behind the montagues back and asked for the young girls hand in marragie, the mantague saw what was going on and killed the betrayer.

And that's what i think caused the great fued between the Montague's and the Capulet's :)

  6. Plainly any reason other than the one I list below is incorrect (just kidding). It was obviously a warm sunny day when two great friends, one a Montague and the other a Capulet, were walking down a cobbled Verona street when they both saw an open pouch of shiny open coins. Naturally, being spineless thieves, they both jumped for the bag each pulling to get it from the other when the bag ripped and all the coins conveniently landed in a gutter and rolled away. From then on the Montagues and Capulets were taught to hate each other. And that is the truth.

  7. In Romeo and Juliet, the rivalry between the Montagues and Capulets was sparked off by an event. I believe that it was something that wouldn’t have seemed important but meant a lot to the men. The event was an argument over a chicken. Both Montague and Capulet claimed that they had seen the chicken first. But after they ripped it in half they began to fight and told their families about the events.

  8. Romeo And Juliet --- "From Ancient Grudge"

In Romeo and Juliet, the quarrelling between the Capulet's and the Montague's started all because of a chicken. They were great friends once but when they saw this chicken, everything changed. They both thought they had seen the chicken first, and start to fight over it by holding its hands and feet and pulling. Eventually they killed the chicken and got angry at each other. They fought and then when they got tired, they went home. They told all their relatives about the fight and how the Bad Montague and The Imbecile Capulet stole their chicken. This anger then passed down through generations and they continued fighting.

  9. My whole 'theory' behind all this useless fighting is very simple. two great friends, obviously one a Capulet and one a Montague having a good time and doing the old 'punch in the shoulder' as a joke, but the Capulet took it too far and actually punched him, the Montague taking it seriously punched him back. thus starting a brawl, and since that both houses have fought over a harmless (yet was seen as something else) joke.

  10. Our group came up with an idea of what could have been the cause of the hatred towards each house. The Montagues and Capulet started out as friends, just talking for a bit. But then one Montague got introduced to a different Capulet, and as this happened the Montague's bracelet was stolen. Of course, the Montague's then accuse the Capulet of stealing it, but they continue to argue about it until it ends up being a brawl. In the end, both sides end up hating each other.

  11. Ancient Grudge

Romeo and Juliet basically aims to show that sometimes its better to forgive and forget, even more so when the disagreement happened along time ago. My guess the disagreement was about money, because only money would create such hatred. Some family stole money and to get revenge someone was killed. That's my view on might have happened.

  12. Ancient Grudge between two Households.

In our group in which were Val, Sara, Anne-Mieke and I, we decided that one accident with money ruined good relationship between two families. We made a little play in which were those two families Montague (Val and I) and Capulet (Sara and Anne-Mieke). At the beginning they were friends and were talking outside together. Then one Montague(Sara) tried to still money from the Capulet(me) and it didn’t finish very well because Capulet overreacted and killed thief. That scene saw two friends at the background and start arguing whose fault it was and then they promised never ever speak to each other again after that accident there was huge fight between two households in Verona.

  13. This is my story about how the Capulets started hating the Montagues:

A man was walking in the street with a very expensive item in his hand (we don't need to know what it is, as long as we know it's worth a lot) and he is a Capulet. Another man is walking and he is a Montague. He accidentally bumps into the Capulet causing him to drop his expensive item. This makes the Capulet very mad, so he kills the Montague without thinking. Another Montague sees this happening, and gets furious at the Capulet and kills him. A Capulet sees this happening, and he is even more furious and the Montague. They swear to each other that their families will hate each other forever, and that's when it all starts.

  14. Sorry it took so long. I tried and then it rejected it. So I tried to re-post it and it failed again so I gave up for a while , but now I've tried again (and hopefully succeeding :D !)
" One day a Capulet was running down the street away from a man who he had robbed. One day a Montague was taking a leisurely stroll down the street. The Montague stopped to tie his shoelace and the Capulet ran and tripped over the Montague. The man came and beat the Capulet senseless and took back the money the Capulet had taken. The Capulet stood up outraged and blamed the Montague for his beating. The Montague was insulted by such an accusation and spat on the Capulet's foot claiming that he never wanted to be around the likes of 'you people' again. So henceforth Capulet's hated Montagues and Montague's hated Capulets. Until .. One day .. in the middle of Verona , the two families will unite ... for a day ... ; ) ( coming soon to a cinema near you )

  15. This is how it REALLY happened:

Long ago, Capulets and Montegues were good friends. Then, two girls, one of them from the Montegues and the other one from the Capulets, played together outside, without the parents watchin. The Montegue child has somehow got her dad's sharp weapon and the children played with it. But then a man on a horse passed and accidently pushed the Capulet girl, so that she fell on the sword an died. The parents then had a huge fight, the Capulet said that the MOntegues child is a monster and murderer, the MOntegue said that the Capulet was wrong and that all was an accident.
--> the families began to hate each other and all that just because of that accident...

  16. The Capulets where Bragging about how they bought a really expensive bracelet. They told the Montegues that it cost more than there house. Then the bracelet goes missing. The Capulets quickly blame the Montegues then a big fight starts.

  17. i believe that the ancient grudge was that the capulets and the monteugues were both best friends, and they both had their eyes set on the same girl, but they agreed that they would not take her, because their friendship meant more. The capulet broke the promise, and out of anger and the feeling of betrayal the montegue killed the capulet, and this started a fight between the families.
