Comparison and Contrast

Please take twenty minutes to write two paragraphs comparing and contrasting Ray Bradburry's "There Will Come Soft Rains" with the Soviet animation adapted from it.

Paragraph 1: Comparison (Similarities between the story and the film)

Paragraph 2: Contrast (Differences between the story and the film)

  1. Compare and Contrast
They are both set after a nuclear bomb was dropped on the U.S.A. They both start at 7:00 and then go through the day; starting with getting up, then going to work. They both have some machines making the house live on. In both of them, they have the computer asking some wild cats, or a bird for the password and then shooing them away. They both have the poem ‘There will come soft rains’ By Sara Teasdale.
The stories have many differences. In Bradbury’s story all of the things that the computer says rhyme, but not on the Soviet story. In the Soviet story, they die in their beds but in Bradbury’s story they die outside, playing. In Bradbury’s story, it is set in the beginning of August while the Soviet story is set at the end of 2026, new years. In Bradbury’s story, the house burns down later on in the day and it goes through a lot more of the day. In the soviet one, the house is blown up by some explosion. In the Soviet version, it skips out a lot of the detail that there is in Bradbury’s story such as the meadow in the evening and the Bridge game. It also leaves out the cleaning mice and the injured dog that comes to the house.

  2. Comparison and Contrast
In Ray Bradbury’s Story, there are a few things that are similar to that of the movie adaptation. They both have the lone house that is operated by machines, they are both set after a nuclear explosion, at the beginning of each they start at the same time, 7:00 O’clock, the house makes the same breakfast in both versions. Later on the house asked for a ‘Password’ whenever a bird, wild cat, etc… walked near the house.
Both of the stories have many differences, as in the Soviet Version, the date is the 31st of December 2026 where as in Bradbury’s version it is on the 4th of august 2026, in Bradbury’s story the people die outside the house but in the Soviet One they have died in their beds, in Bradbury’s story the House always Rhymes when it talks but the Soviet one it talks normally. The Soviet version does not include much of Bradbury’s story as it leaves out the Mechanical mice and the injured dog, the Martinis and Cards, the huge fire at the end, and the children’s play area with the beasts and the meadow.

  3. There Will Come Soft Rains Compare and Contrast

The film and the story are in some ways similar. The house is robotic. Meaning there was a robot telling the owners of the house to wake up in the film and the story or that food is ready or the robots in the house woke them up in the morning. The house was empty in both of them and it was very protective in both. The family was actually burnt to ashes. And it ended with the house being fried and demolished.

There are so many differences between the Russian film and the actual story written by Ray Bradbury. Firstly in the Russian film the family’s silhouettes are not burnt onto the walls but instead are ashes. The story states that the house has only been deserted for a few days but in the movie it has been deserted for a longer period of time as the robots prepared food for New Years Eve. In the movie there wasn’t any focus on how the house was a clean freak where as in the story the mice were totally freaked out when something gets dirty. The story also has a dog in it that comes in and dies and in the film there isn’t a dog, instead there is a bird that flies in and the robot tries to kill it but destroys the house instead of killing the bird. There was a bird mentioned in the story but it never got into the house.
One main difference that really struck me is that the story puts a image of a modern and clean technological house where as the film portrays a old fashioned house with old furniture and a robot that to me looks very cartoony and not like a robot. This could be because in my imagination the future looks a bit different then what the Russians thought the future looked like when they produced the film.

    Of
    There Will Come soft Rain

The settings of the stories are both mentioned as, ‘Allendale, California on August 4, 2026’ The similarities of the story and the movie, are that there is a something technological telling the (dead) people who live(d) there what to do, telling them the time and what they are suppose to be doing at that specific time, both stories have an automated house that controls the technological machines. And both stories have also revealed that the family who lived in the house, which are suppose to be two parents – a daughter and a son have died.

The differences can be mentioned as, the story has an automatic clock telling them what to do at a specific time, and the movie has a robot telling the people what to do, also at a specific time. The story mentions that there are mice finishing cleaning the house but in the movie it shows us, that there is the robot that does all the work and also the machines that the robot controls.

The similarities between the actual story and the Russian film were that there was a robot that was the brain of the house, all the owners were dead, and few more. There is a robot, or a brain of the house, in the original story that knows when to set out the food, when to wake up the kids, etc. And in the film there is a robot, as well, who has those jobs. In the story, when a bird landed on the roof or just touched the house the alarm went off and the house closed itself off. The house had the same reaction (and a little more) to the bird as it did in the story. The robot/house in the story always said the time, and so did the one in the film. The story and the film also both start at 7:00 o’clock, and they both include the poem by Sara Teasdale.

The differences between the film and the story were many. One of the main ones was that there was no dog in the entire film, which is definitely different than the actual story. Also, in the film, when the bird flew in the robot sort of destroyed the house trying to get rid/kill the bird. In the actual story, the house was destroyed by being burnt by a large, un-tamable fire. The children and people that lived in the house, too, were not in ashes INSIDE the house (as in the film) but they were outside, and their silhouettes were stained on to the walls. The house in the film also didn’t really have any little mice-cleaners either, while the ones in the story were always detecting filth/dirt and cleaning up. When the robot asks Mrs. McClellan what she wants to hear in the film, it plays a song that is not included in the story. While in the story the house recites a poem by Sara Teasdale. The film only recites the poem AFTER the house has been destroyed, and only the remains of it are there. Also, the dates of the film and the story are different. In the film, the date is the 31st of December, 2026, while in the story the date was August 4, 2026. Another difference is that there was no game of ‘bridge’ set up in the film, while in the book there was.

Both the film and the short story where both surrounding the fact that it was the future and that they were set in 2026. They both described that the house in some way killed itself. It described that the house thought for itself and catered for the family. One of the small things that they had in common was that both houses woke the masters up at 7:00am. The houses were based after Nuclear Warfare.
There were many different things as well such as in the story there was a dying dog but in the movies there was a bird which made the house commit suicide. The Russian version was a black house but in the American version it was a half white and half black house with imprints of the family’s image. The stories house died from a burning fire but the movies house died from punching itself to death. The dog and the bird where another big separate thing in which the dog died on the floor of the house but the bird just flew away. The old dead lady and the young dead lady set both of the stories apart in the fact that the story young woman was the man’s wife but in the Russian version the old lady was just a freak who listened to bad music. The American version had “There will come soft rain” in the story but the Russian version had it playing during the credits. The main thing that I picked up that was the American house was nice and happy with sunny weather and the Russian house was dark and gloomy with a freaky looking arm and dark weather.

  7. Comparison and Contrast:

The similarities between the two pieces are that they are both set in a house that seems to be the only one standing after some kind of nuclear warfare. They both seem to have the automatic robots that are programmed to assist the owners of the house, and they both have the destruction of the house at the end of the story, although the way it happens is different.

The differences between the two stories is that the way the houses work is different, for example in the written version there are a bunch of different robots doing different jobs, but in the second one it seems that there is one main robots saying everything and activating all the other robots, for example, in the written version there are mice that clean up dirt when they sense it, and in the Russian movie version, there are ashes and no robots come to clean it up. Another difference is that the movie version makes the house seem like a horrible place to be because it portrayed the house as being dark with a mean robot while in the story version the house seems to be very relaxed and a nice place to be. Another difference was that the story version made it seem like the house has been going on for years, but in the movie, it made it seem like the nuclear accident happened in the previous night. The last thing I found as a difference was that in the story, the house was demolished because of a fire, when in the movie the house explodes because of the main robot crashing into something that is probably explosive.

  8. Compare and Contrast the movie and film
The similarities in the film and the story are the robots that are in the movie and also in the story, and that the date is 2026. What is also similar is that you don’t see people you see that the robot is calling the children and that it is children hour but you don’t see people. You see a house in the story it is also a house. And when you want to come in the house he asked the password when the password is wrong you can’t come in. On both of them is the explosion on the last where it ends. The family is dead in the story in the movie.
The differences in the story is that the clock is telling what to do, and also that in the story is that a dog is running into the house he bites in his tail and he died. And in the story there are much animals like yellow giraffes etc but in the movie you see only a bird who can’t come in because of the password. Then you hear in the story a voice who asked to a woman which poem she wants to hear but there is no woman. Then there is fire in the movie the robot goes after the bird and makes everything broken and the whole house is gone but in the story there is fire and all the animals are running and one for one are dying, then you see the smoke and the silence and there is a voice who said over and over August 5, 2026 today it is august 5, 2026…

  9. Comparing and Contrasting

    There Will Come Soft Rains

The similarities between the story and the film are that they are both based in the future in 2026. Another similarity is that the house is the only thing that seems to be talking, and it is the house that is eating and serving the tea. They both have the robots that are used to assist the owners of the house automatically. Also, they both have destruction of the house at around the end of the story. In the film and the short story, both the robots can talk.

The differences between them are that in the video, it ended in December 31st, 2026 and in the short story, it ended in August 5th, 2026. In the end of the story, the destruction happens differently to each other. In the short story, there are many robots assisting the house with cleaning and serving food, but in the movie version, there is only one robot doing all the work and assisting the house and its owner. Another difference can be that in the short story, there is a dog in it that ends up dying, but in the movie there is no dog at all. In the story, there are small robots to clean up the mess and dust in the house, and in the movie there are ashes and no robots to clean it up. Also, in the short story it portrays the house as a nice and very relaxing place to be in, but in the house it is dark and mysterious. It wasn’t portrayed as a wonderful house. In the short story it is calm with no fighting, but in the movie the robot has a complete fit and keeps trying to stab a bird which came in its path. Also in the end, in the short story there is a fire, but in the film there is a big explosion.

  10. There Will Come Soft Rains.
The film is true to the story and holds the key ideas that are portrayed by the story. Both are addressing the issues of nuclear warfare and mass death or extinction of the human race due to war. The film has edited parts of the story and made it is visually unpleasant and not so the idea of a perfect or idyllic life of the future that was given by the story. For example in the story there were cleaning animals that keep the house tidy. There was an automatic things like, the house set up a card table and lit cigars to make the inhabitance life easy and more enjoyable were as in the film there is only one menacing robot that acts in scary manner moving around giving instructions to the inhabitants. Later the robot tries to kill a dove that flies into the house but ends up destroy the house completely.
In the film it highlights the death of the people as compared to the story were it springs the death of the people on the reader

    Comparison and Contrast

Ray Bradbury’s "There Will Come Soft Rains" and the Soviet animation adapted from it are both very similar because even though the people have turned to ash the house still goes on like they are still alive and does the things it would normally do. In both cases the house has mind of its own. Also in the end of the story the house is destroyed because as much as it tried to protect itself it still got destroyed. In both stories the robot reports the time and in both the house is the only house standing in the city, in two stories the house demands a password to be entered. Both stories are set in the U.S and talk about the view of the war house nature will live on and there would be no notice that humans have been destroyed.

However there are also some very clear differences between the two stories. In Ray Bradbury’s the family dog comes back to the house whilst in the Soviet animation there is no dog that comes back to the house but a bird that is seen as an intruder. Also the way the people died in both are very different the Ray’s the people die outside and their silhouettes are left on a wall of the house outside but in the Soviet animation the people die in their sleep and ash is left behind. Also in the story the robot voice sounds cherry but in the animation the robot sounded dull. At the end of the story the house is destroyed by a fire but in the animation the house destroys itself. Also in the animation the house didn’t clean up the remains were as in the story the house cleans up the dead. In the story the people were dead days before the story was written but in the animation the people die over night.

    There Will Come Soft Rains
    Story Vs. Film

    Similarities
The similarities in this story and film were mainly that the house was alive in both book and film and they are both set in California. Also that the people were gone, and that there had been a nuclear explosion because of the suits that were shown in the movie also both the movie and the story ended in the same way, with the house being destroyed and nature keep’s moving without any care. Also the poem ‘There will come soft rains’ is used in both. The house/robot was also speaking in rhyme and the breakfast was made the same in the film and the story. Both houses seemed to function the same too. Animals were also used in both the film and the story.
    Differences
There are many differences in the film and story. The obvious one is that the movie is in Russian. In the film the house has a massive moving robot arm while in the story the walls spoke. In the story when dirt was sensed anywhere mice would come and clean it where as in the film, when all the ashes fell on the floor it was left there. Also the dates are different. The film date was 31st December 2026 while the story said the date was on the 4th August. There was more information written down in the story then shown in the film and the film mentioned an old woman where as in the story this wasn’t mentioned. There was a nursery room mentioned in the book showing there were small children, where as in the film this didn’t seem to show. Also in the film the nuclear accident had happened the night before but in the book it seemed to happen a while before. A bird was used instead of a dog, but in the film the bird was the trigger that made the house blow up because the mechanical arm tried to destroy the bird, but ended up destroying itself but in the book a fire caused the house to perish away.

  13. There will come soft rains – Compare and Contrast
The two versions of ‘There will come soft rains’ (one the original and the other a Soviet Film interpretation) do have similarities in their plots. For example in the written story the House is in Allendale, California as it is in the movie. The house is very automated and robotic in both stories and the family that it serves is also already dead. The house itself was destroyed in both stories as well.
The original version of the story was set in a different time of year, in the summer which painted a more idyllic picture. The house was also more fluid, rather than having a huge arm with a gruesome metal face on the end, the original version had a more modern theme to it. Another difference was that the couple had been killed outside by the nuclear blast, where as in the film the family was killed very recently in their beds. The destruction of the house was also different in both versions, in the original a tree falls and sets the house on fire, whereas in the film a bird causes the house to destroy itself. There was also religion mentioned in the film adaptation whereas in the written version, there is no mention of Religion.
I personally preferred the house in the original version because of the idyllic setting and ‘American dream’ style. Understandably a nuclear bomb had exploded, but it was set in summer so there was still an idea of clear skies.

There were some similarities of the movie and the actual story. The fact that the house was computerized. All that was left of the family were silhouettes. The house was destroyed at the end as well. There was an animal in both versions that went mad, in the movie the bird went mad at the end trying to get to the land within the hologram, and the dog is in the story went mad trying to get into the kitchen for some food. The setting is the same in both versions ; Allendale ,California . In both versions it shows the house still catering to this family’s every need despite the fact that they were already gone.
The two versions were also very different. In the end of the written story the house catches fire, and in the movie the house destroys itself. There was no mention of a dog in the movie. In the written story the house seems more personified, and the house had been alone for a while and the family had been gone for a while where as in the movie the family had gone that night. In the written story the author is very good at projecting pictures with words for example; “The city gave off a radioactive glow.” This gives us insight about what is really going on, the nuclear war. The written story was written for 2026 where as in the film it is more of a past day setting for example the gramophone. In the movie , it is around December, and New Year. But in the story it is set in August. In the story as well there was no mention of any religion but in the original story there was a mention of a morning prayer and a Jesus statue .

    Similarities and differences
    Movie-book
There were not many similarities between the movie and the book. But the same concept was in both of them, they were both connected to a nucleated area, they both had a robot controlling the house and all the robots cleaning and making food. The same verses were used when the robot was talking, and the family did perish in a similar way. The room that was most alike the book was the sitting room, where there was a song playing and a projector showing a lovely summer setting. In the book this was not mentioned but the house had similar facilities with the way it functioned. In both the book and the movie an animal was used, but then in different ways.

There are more differences than similarities; the house was completely different to the house in the book. This house was made of cement it was plain and in a hidden shell unlike in the book was the house was on its own in the middle of a deserted area, but it had a nice setting and a garden with it. Also the main idea that the film was set in Russia is different to the book, which is set in America. In the film the functions of the house were not all put to use or there, in the book a lot more description was used and the house seemed to be more thought about. The robot was also very different, in the film it is an arm that moves around the whole house, in the book it is just a machine in the walls talking. The film also mentioned an old lady and it included a dove, unlike the book that just included a dog. Also the religion concept, in the movie the robot told the old lady that it was time for her to do her daily prayers, in the book, religion was never used or spoken about.

  16. Similarities:

Between the movie and the story there were a few similarities between them. The house in both was run by robots and they seemed to work on a daily basis program (same everyday thing.) The family was still dependent on the robots for all their daily jobs and there was obviously still set in the 1950s as there was an old war song playing, a Rubix cube and some other hints. In the end the house was destroyed in both. It was still in Allendale, California in late 2026.

    Differences:

Between the movie and the story there were many differences between them. Starting at the end in the movie a bird went into the house and the robot went mad and destroyed the house because of it, where in the book there was a fire and the robot was burnt down (along with the house.) In the movie, the house had nobody in it for a while, where in the book it was a one day thing. Also in the book there was a garden where she was picking flowers, I had a picture in my head that everywhere, and everyone was ruined, apart from their house. Where in the movie everything was destroyed apart from their house (there garden had vanished.) In the movie it was very late December but in the book it was in august. The robot and the little mice where definitely different as it seemed like many different robots working together where in

    by: Sara Welander 9B

    Similarities
The similarities between the story and the film of “There will come soft rains” are that they were both set in Allendale, California, 2026. Both of them had robotic houses and all had the similar feeling of something linking to radioactivity/nuclear bombing had happened in that city. There were both no people in the movie and the story, and there was also 1 animal that came in. They as well had in the end that the house was destroyed with all the robots inside it.

    Differences
The differences between the story and the film are that they had different dates in each one. In the story it was August 5th, 2026, while in the film it was December 31st, 2026 and it was snowing. In the movie it was also much darker and depressing than in the story where it was a bit happier in some parts. The animals were different in the story and the film. In the story there was a dog, while in the film there was a dove (probably a symbol of peace) which had flown in. The situations in the end how the house died were different too. In the film the dove actually killed the house, while in the story a tree branch fell in the window and caused a fire. I think in the story the robotic house was friendlier than the house in the movie which looked actually quite dangerous.

  19. There Will Come Soft Rains

The film of “There Will Come Soft Rains” has many similarities and differences to the story of it.
The film was set in a much darker setting than the story. In the story there was no snow and there was light and sun shining. And the robots did speak in a much nicer tone with rhymes like “Seven-nine, breakfast time”. And in the story it was August, in the film it was Sylvester. The family was in the story four people big, in the film there were five people in the family, because there was also a grandmother. In this film was no dog mentioned that belonged to the family. There was a bird that came in and made the machine destroy itself – it explode. This is also different to the story because there was a fire that destroyed the house. And the family in the film was in some kind of “shelter-house” with some special clothing. That wasn’t mentioned in the story. And in the film there was a scene with religion. IN the story was no mention of religion.
But there are also many similarities. Both, film and story, are very sad and end with the house getting destroyed. In both there is this destroyed city in the background. And the bird was kind of replacing the dog. And the bird is a dove this is the symbol of freedom, and when you see the bird being chased by the machine, you feel sorry for the bird. That’s the same with the story, because there you feel really sorry for the dog, because it dies. And in both, there is this poem “There Will Come Soft Rains” played.

  20. Similarities:
The story sets out in California, United states
The house does everyhting by itself
    It sets in future

    Differences:
There is no dog in the film.
In story it sets out in summer, and in the film it sets out in december.
In the story the family died outside in hot summer day, and in the film they died overnight while sleeping.
In film there are no cleaning mice.
In the film there is a dove, and in the story there is no dove.
In the film there is chris which has to do with religion, and in the story there is no religion.
In the story there is no old person, and in the film there is the silhuette of the old lady.

    Compare and Contrast.
In the both stories in the film and in the book “There Will Come Soft Rains” we can see differences and similarities.
They are all set in California, 2026.So these stories are telling us about future. They all have robots in the house which are making lives better for people. They all discribing one day from 7 o'clock at the morning till the evening. Whole family died from the nuclear war so there arent anyone in the house exept robot. The robot was talking with rhythm whole the time. They all have the same poem "There will come soft rains"
They also have some differences between each other. Family died outside the house in the story but in the film we can see that they all died in their beds. Story discribes house very nice and cosy but in the film we can see that its all dark and robot talking not with cheerful tone. Also there are different seasons in the story was summer and in the film it was winter. They changed animals too because in the film we saw a bird not a dog like in the story. In the film we can see a religion while in the story they didnt write about it anything. House died from big explosion and we can say that robot destroyed itself but in the story it died from the fire

    Similarities/Differences

Between the short film and the book, there are many differences and similarities.

Both books feature a house. Both are controlled by a robot even though the one in the book is more human-like. The characters in both stories are dead, but what differs is that in the film, an incident occurred the night before which lead the family to die. The two stories begin the same way where breakfast is ready and is then cleaned up the same way, the stories start at the same time and are set after a nuclear bomb fell on America. An animal comes in during the story where the robot tries to kill it.

However, the story is very detailed and includes a very pleasant setting at first whilst in the film, the setting is a very cold soviet setting like a bomb shelter. The robot rhymes in the book and has a very positive attitude and is very respectful of the family. The robot in the film however, acts very robotically by how it talks and looks. A dog is the only live character in the film, to provide irony in the film, a dove is used. This is because a dove symbolizes peace and happiness even though it is trying to be killed by the robot. The movie is set on new years eve and day whilst the book is set in August. I believe that the film and book do not have very many similarities as the film is not as detailed and is told in a Russian perspective.

  23. The two pieces had many similarities with each other. The stories were based at the same time, and both involved a highly technological house, and both involved a barren land, after a presumed nuclear attack, and all humans have been wiped out, and this house is all that is left, keeping itself in shape, and keeping the house clean. At the end of both extracts, the house is to blame for its own ‘demise’, and it still believes that the people are still alive and living in the house.
The extract of the original story seemed to have a ‘friendlier’ feel, and seemed more modern, and a pleasant feel to the house, whereas the film felt more like a ‘bomb shelter’, and felt gloomier, more dismal, and less pleasant than the house in the original story. In the film, the ‘event’ had happened last night, whereas on the book, the incident had happened anywhere from last night, or up to years previously. A dove was used in the film, and when it got locked in, it seemed that the Soviet director wanted it to appear that the peace was being blocked away. The film had a more religious sense, and seemed more old-fashioned. The film looked at the stereotypical American’s house at the time, with the new year’s dinner, and a religious aspect playing through too.
Out of the two, my favourite by far is the original piece of writing, as the house seemed friendlier, and more the kinda ‘House of the Future’ we depict. The film showed the house as a more ‘mechanical’, brutish being.

  25. There Will Come Soft Rains Story and Film Comparison

The similarities in There Will Come Soft Rains story and film were that the house was alive. In the book and film the house was alive and could talk. Also they are both set in California. Another similarity was that all the people were gone because of a huge nuclear explosion, and that there had been a nuclear explosion because. The song that the owner of the surviving house, (‘There will come soft rains’) is used in both too. The house in both the book and the film had a schedule that it followed. Both houses seemed to function the same too.
There are many differences in the film and story. The obvious one is that the movie is in Russian. The film showed the house as a huge robot arm whilst in the book it was just a voice of the talking house. In the film nobody came to clear the mess left by the people whilst in the book the robot was programmed to clean it. The amount of detail of the story and film was much more different. The book explained every detail whilst the film was less descriptive. In the film they used birds whilst in the book there was a dog. Also the nursery room mentioned in the book showed small children, but in the film none showed. Also in the film the nuclear accident had happened the night before, but in the book it looked like it had happened a long time ago. Also in the book the machine does not die because of a bird but a dog, but in the film a bird destroys the machine by mistake of course but it still happens.
